In Spanish, “arrecife” means reef, a fitting word to describe the beautiful seafront promenades you’ll encounter at this port of call in the Canary Islands. The capital city of the island of Lanzarote, Arrecife is a prime spot to view colorful fish, go golfing or just take a peaceful stroll.

Popular attractions in Arrecife include the St. Gabriel Castle, a defensive fortress that was destroyed by pirates and rebuilt as a stone castle in the 16th century. Now housing an ethnographic museum, the St. Gabriel Castle also provides one of the best views of the city and the sparkling Atlantic Ocean.

Other sites include the Playa Reducto, Arrecife’s most popular beach, and the Charco de San Ginés, a man-made lagoon surrounded by fishermen’s white cottage homes and charming cafés.
