Cruising Through the Bay of Kotor

[caption id="attachment_15783" align="aligncenter" width="550"] Photo of Star Clipper anchored at the Bay of Kotor by Rod Marten.

Sometimes there's beauty in the gloom. Rod Marten snapped this shot of Star Clipper anchored in the bay of Kotor and the tender coming to rescue the folks at shore from the spritz.

Rain or shine there's no doubt that Kotor, Montenegro, is a beautiful place! The mist rising from the mountains adds to the ambience and guests were happy to get cozy and dry once they reached the ship.

The following i san excerpt from Cruise Critic's profile of Kotor:

"You will be rewarded if you set your alarm for an early start at Kotor, Montenegro, because part of the fun is entering the Bay of Kotor and gliding for an hour through the mountains on a 17-mile waterway that some people call Europe's southernmost fjord.

It's not actually a fjord, as fjords are caused by glacial activity, and the Bay of Kotor is the result of an old river running from the interior to the Adriatic Sea. Still, the views are fjord-like, with mountains rising on both sides of a long, thin bay that leads to the old walled town of Kotor."

Nancy in Kotor, Montenegro

Nancy has been writing about her summer travels. Celebrating 46 years of marriage, she and her husband Joe left the city of brotherly love and landed in Venice, Italy, to begin their journey. She is sailing the Mediterranean aboard Royal Clipper, and was kind enough to share her experience with us. Below are some excerpts from her blog. For her whole story you can visit her personal blog Nancy Near Philadelphia.

The next day found us at Kotor, Montenegro. This town was heavily walled and one of the activities people engaged in was climbing and walking along the top of the wall. I passed.

Kotor was probably the poorest port that we visited, and there were more beggars there than we had seen in other ports. We walked around for an hour or two, taking in the sights.

No one seemed to know what this was, but deep down I knew it was a Quidditch disaster:

And then it was back to Royal Clipper, because we had another port in another country to visit the next day!

A First-Time Visit to Kotor, Montenegro

We can never have too much of Montenegro! Thanks to Fred Harder for sending in these excellent shots of Kotor.

Here are a handful of photos I took in Kotor in 2011. I thoroughly enjoyed our stop at Kotor...and the long approach in was visually spectacular.  It is a rare occasion to visit a 'new' country; that alone made it a fun stop for me.  I sailed with some friends on the Royal Clipper that summer and invited along a lady as a travelling companion.  It was our first date; an extended one at that.  We are now happily engaged to be married.

A Bird's-Eye View of Montenegro ... and More!

Thanks to Louise Dibble for sending in some beautiful photos of Kotor, Montenegro.

Managed to climb half way up the hill 14 months after having open heart surgery! Was very proud of myself and it was definitely worthwhile to experience the beautiful view. One of my favourite ports.
