Sunrise and the Soúnio Peninsula

Guest Gerry Lewis joined Star Clipper in the eastern Mediterranean and had this special experience to share.

"Last week we sailed on Star Clipper from Istanbul to Athens. On Wednesday evening as we sailed between Skopelos and Poros, Captain Yuriy advised us to be on the bridge the next morning at 0700 for something special. Just at sunrise on Thursday morning we sailed past the Temple of Poseidon on the Soúnio Peninsula. Captain Yuriy stopped the ship for 15-20 minutes so we could take photos. Amazing to look up from our ship and see the same sight that sailors have seen for almost 2,500 years." -- Gerry Lewis

Mamma Mia! Star Clipper at Skopelos

Star Clipper guest Sten E. Ranwald sent this lovely memory from a May 10 voyage from Istanbul to Athens. At Skopelos he enjoyed the MammaMia! tour that visits the sites of the beloved film.

Skopelos is the largest of the Sporades islands and the capital of the archipelago. Its wealth is derived principally from the fine locally produced wine.

The “chora” or main town of Skopelos is considered by many to be one of the prettiest harbor side towns in the Greek islands: the houses are built in tiers ascending the hillside and the port is lined with mulberry and plane trees.

Most of the town’s taverns and cafés are located on the waterfront; relax and enjoy traditional Greek refreshment as you watch the world go by.

It is fun to wander down narrow cobblestone streets, discovering hidden courtyards filled with flowers and Byzantine churches, or just browse around the small craft shops and boutiques.

At Skopelos Star Clippers features a half-day Mamma Mia! Tour featuring Ag Ioannis Chuch, which was used for the wedding scenes in the film adaptation starring Meryl Steep, Amanda Seyfried, Pierce Brosnan and Colin Firth. The church stands high on a cliff with spectacular views of the Skopelos coastline and Alonissos. After visiting the church the tour heads to Kastani beach where the Mamma Mia! crew filmed for 10 days. There guests have time to relax and enjoy the pristine beach and crystal blue water.
