Mamma Mia! Star Clipper at Skopelos

Star Clipper guest Sten E. Ranwald sent this lovely memory from a May 10 voyage from Istanbul to Athens. At Skopelos he enjoyed the MammaMia! tour that visits the sites of the beloved film.

[caption id="attachment_15548" align="aligncenter" width="550"] The Mamma Mia Chapel at Skopelos.

Skopelos is the largest of the Sporades islands and the capital of the archipelago. Its wealth is derived principally from the fine locally produced wine.

The “chora” or main town of Skopelos is considered by many to be one of the prettiest harbor side towns in the Greek islands: the houses are built in tiers ascending the hillside and the port is lined with mulberry and plane trees.

Most of the town’s taverns and cafés are located on the waterfront; relax and enjoy traditional Greek refreshment as you watch the world go by.

It is fun to wander down narrow cobblestone streets, discovering hidden courtyards filled with flowers and Byzantine churches, or just browse around the small craft shops and boutiques.

At Skopelos Star Clippers features a half-day Mamma Mia! Tour featuring Ag Ioannis Chuch, which was used for the wedding scenes in the film adaptation starring Meryl Steep, Amanda Seyfried, Pierce Brosnan and Colin Firth. The church stands high on a cliff with spectacular views of the Skopelos coastline and Alonissos. After visiting the church the tour heads to Kastani beach where the Mamma Mia! crew filmed for 10 days. There guests have time to relax and enjoy the pristine beach and crystal blue water.

Postcards from the Sea of Marmara

Thank you to Star Clipper guest Vicente Bono Gomis who shared these gorgeous photos from his recent sailing in the eastern Mediterranean and Sea of Marmara.

[caption id="attachment_15536" align="aligncenter" width="550"] "Navigating through the sea of Marmara." - guest Vicente Bono Gomis‎

The Sea of Marmara is an extension of the Mediterranean that is bordered entirely by Turkey and separates European Turkey from Asian Turkey. The sea connects to the Aegean Sea via the Dardanelles Strait and to the Black Sea through the Bosporus Strait.

The sea has two distinct island groups. The first is the Kızıl Islands in the northeast near Istanbul; these islands are primarily resort areas. The second group consists of the Marmara islands proper in the southwest, off Kapıdagı Peninsula; these have granite, slate, and marble that have been quarried since antiquity—hence the sea’s name (Greek marmaros, “marble”).

Underwater Adventures in the Caribbean

[caption id="attachment_15505" align="aligncenter" width="550"] Photos by Michi & Daniela.

Water sports are a huge part of the Star Clippers experience. From kayaking to waterskiing guests love to get in touch with the crystal seas of the Caribbean and Mediterranean. Today we plunge into the waters of the Caribbean. Star Clippers are able to access quieter ports which means guests can snorkel in remote regions where the tropical fish outweigh the human population.

These photos are from an underwater adventure in the Caribbean that was captured by German photographers Michi & Daniela as they sailed on Royal Clipper through the Windward Islands.

The Day of the Seafarer

Today the International Maritime Organization celebrates the 4th annual Day of the Seafarer, held each year on June 25. The purpose of the campaign is to show appreciation to the hardworking men and women who work at sea, often for months at a time.

At Star Clippers this extends from the dining room attendants to the crew on deck pulling the ropes and watersports team. We dearly appreciate the hardwork and dedication of the crew.

Real or Rendered?

The answer may surprise you! This is a photo taken by Star Clippers' guest Jeffery Rich of Royal Clipper passing through Drake's Channel in the Virgin Islands. Rich added an effect to the photo to give it the appearance of an oil painting.

Take a Bow

Thanks to James W. Bottoms of Vest Connection Travel Inc. in Maryland for the photos in this post.

The bowsprit net is one of the elements that sets Star Clippers apart from traditional cruise lines. Guests love the freedom of sailing along suspended 30 feet above the sea. The views are incredible -- you may spot a dolphin chasing the waves below or one of the incredible rainbows that always seem to follow or lead our beautiful tall ships.

Other incredible views from the bow are of the ship itself! It's funny how a little perspective can add another element of interest to your journey. Lay back and look up at the clouds and sails or look down upon the lovely figurehead. Or you could follow her lead and look forward to the course at hand.

What's your favorite part of relaxing in the bowsprit net? Let us know in the comments below!

A Michelin Star Chef and Star Clipper in the Med

Star Flyer was pleased to welcome Michelin Star chef David Mottl onboard for the May 17 sailing that called at such fabulous ports as Calvi, Corsica; Portoferraio, Italy; and St. Tropez, France.

Mottl earned the coveted Michelin Star at Marco Polo in Wilhelmshaven, Germany, where he is chef de cuisine.

"Along with the modern yet elegant decor and the friendly service, it is above all the fine aromatic cuisine of Lower Franconia-born chef David Mottl that stands out at Marco Polo. His menu combines many North German as well as international influences and he sets great store by the quality of the produce he uses." - Michelin Inspector

Onboard Star Flyer Mottle prepared such savory treats as Grilled Salmon Fillet over asparagus with hollandaise and micro-chives, Roasted Pork Medallions with jus, mushrooms and yellow rice; and Cornish Hen, flayed and roasted over zucchini.

Fine dining at sea? Yes please!
