Royal Clipper Glows

Here's an excerpt of a glowing review from a guest, Tim, posted on Cruise Critic:

"Boarding the Royal Clipper in Venice, we knew we were in for a voyage of a lifetime, such a magnificent sailing ship with its 5 masts standing tall and erect. Champagne to welcome us as we made our way to our cabin on level 3 ... The cabin was superbly fitted out and a bottle of champagne and petite fours awaited us while unpacking. The Lounge, Dining area, Library and Bar areas are superb. The staff were great and always willing to help and put on a smile. The food was excellent and you were never left wanting.

Sailing out of Venice down the Grand Canal to the sounds of The Conquest of Paradise by Vangellis taken from the soundtrack of the film Vangellis 1492 was itself a memorable experience conjuring up all sorts of emotions within the passengers."

Travel writer Heidi Sarna recently enjoyed a family sailing on Star Clipper. Heidi, her husband and their two kids, Kavi and Tejas, sailed through the Med calling at beautiful ports in Greece and Turkey. Highlights of the cruise included hiking at Monemvassia and climbing the mast for a gorgeous view of the crystal blue Mediterranean Sea.

Kavi and Tejas weighed in on their Star Clippers experience, saying:

"It's different than all the other ships, it's better. You feel free, there aren't so many guidelines and rules." -Kavi

"I liked that we could climb the masts, crawl down into the bowsprit net and experience what a ship was like from a long time ago. Plus I liked the Greek ports and the food was really good on board, especially the pastas and tea time snacks." -Tejas

Nothing But Blue Skies in the Med

Thanks to journalist Steve MacNaull for sending in these fabulous shots from his Mediterranean cruise on Star Clipper.

[caption id="attachment_15776" align="aligncenter" width="550"] Crew waves from the bowsprit of the Star Clipper just off the coast of the Greek island of Patmos. Photo by Steve MacNaull.

Star Clippers ships are so beautiful, but it's hard to get a great perspective shot while onboard. That's why guests are offered the opportunity to hop in a zodiac or tender boat, cameras in tow, and take their best shot from the sea!

The crew hams it up on the bowsprit net and guests snap away. No matter what souvenirs you pick up along the way, a few photos can be the best keepsake of all to remember your Star Clippers journey.

It looks like Steve had some luck with the weather in the Med -- have you ever seen skies so blue? Look our for more of Steve's photos in coming posts.

Video: The Joys of a Tall Ship Cruise

Thank you to Susanne Müller of Welcome Aboard for sharing this fabulous video of Star Clipper.

On Star Clipper the crew raises the sails as music fills the air and regal Royal Clipper cruises into view from the starboard side. Ladies order rum cocktails at The Piano Bar and the crews exchange salutes from the bow. Later, darkness falls and the music turns up. People of all ages and places of origin join in dancing on the deck and cheer when the captain arrives to join the fun. This is a snapshot of the joys of sailing a tall ship.

"Small world: We passed this lovely lady three times today! Funny, we disembarked the Royal Clipper a full week ago and are running into her on the other side of the Med. She's clearly following us..." -@lunaticaatlarge via instagram

Mamma Mia! Star Clipper at Skopelos

Star Clipper guest Sten E. Ranwald sent this lovely memory from a May 10 voyage from Istanbul to Athens. At Skopelos he enjoyed the MammaMia! tour that visits the sites of the beloved film.

[caption id="attachment_15548" align="aligncenter" width="550"] The Mamma Mia Chapel at Skopelos.

Skopelos is the largest of the Sporades islands and the capital of the archipelago. Its wealth is derived principally from the fine locally produced wine.

The “chora” or main town of Skopelos is considered by many to be one of the prettiest harbor side towns in the Greek islands: the houses are built in tiers ascending the hillside and the port is lined with mulberry and plane trees.

Most of the town’s taverns and cafés are located on the waterfront; relax and enjoy traditional Greek refreshment as you watch the world go by.

It is fun to wander down narrow cobblestone streets, discovering hidden courtyards filled with flowers and Byzantine churches, or just browse around the small craft shops and boutiques.

At Skopelos Star Clippers features a half-day Mamma Mia! Tour featuring Ag Ioannis Chuch, which was used for the wedding scenes in the film adaptation starring Meryl Steep, Amanda Seyfried, Pierce Brosnan and Colin Firth. The church stands high on a cliff with spectacular views of the Skopelos coastline and Alonissos. After visiting the church the tour heads to Kastani beach where the Mamma Mia! crew filmed for 10 days. There guests have time to relax and enjoy the pristine beach and crystal blue water.
